7th Grade band class. I’ll never forget the moment. I had always enjoyed having music as a part of my life, but the clarinet just wasn’t quite calling to me. I had messed around with my Dad’s guitar some at home, but that wasn’t a “band class” instrument and besides, a bunch of my friends who were starting bands were already tearing it up in the Guitar dept. Then it came into focus, Romero, the 8th Grader who played bass….look how much fun he is having over there….and he’s headed to high school…..and he’s the ONLY bass player….and maybe they’ll need another!! Done deal. I knew right then I was gonna shift my music focus to bass, and after class approached the band director.
The problem was, my beautiful bass vision quickly became distorted after I decided to sign up for some lessons. It was your typical ol chain store, and the teacher was mainly concerned with hocking his band’s cds rather than actually teaching me anything useful regarding bass…Quite uninspiring, the polar opposite of motivating, and just plain old not even fun.
Thankfully, once again my bass journey was going to take a drastic turn, this time though it was one that would impact my life to this day. After I began high school, the senior bass player referred me to a local lesson spot, and it was there I began studying with bassist and guitarist John McCain. The next 4 years I spent studying with John were filled with deep dives into various aspects of music and life, and were incredibly special in so many ways, well beyond simply learning to play an instrument. While forming the core values of Bassline Music, it was this experience that I drew upon for inspiration.
After graduating high school in northern Virginia, I attended VCU where I studied music and graduated with a Bachelors of Music in 2008. I begun to pick up a number of gigs during my time at VCU, but after graduating I wanted to supplement them with something else music related. I figured I’d give private lessons a go, as they played such a big role in my own development. It didn’t take but a few lessons for me to quickly realize that I’m totally loving this!! I knew then that I wanted to include teaching music as a part of my contribution to passing on the torch to the others who would like to have playing an instrument be a part of their life.
During my time in RVA I have played and performed in a wide variety of bands and venues on upright and electric bass. Playing in such different of settings — ranging from Principle Bassist of Petersburg Symphony, to theaters and musicals, weddings, the Governor’s mansion, hopping in the band van for a tour…. — has allowed me to become more well rounded and better understand music from different angles. I’m thankful for these many experiences, as they have greatly influenced my teaching philosophies. Below, I’ve listed a few of the current bands I perform with for anyone interested in taking a listen or checking out a gig. In fact, the show posters at Bassline Music provide a little journey through some of my favorite performances I’ve been a part of over the years.…
Thank you for considering Bassline Music as you further your explorations into music. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, we are glad to answer any questions or clarify anything regarding our lessons and policies.
